Our Story

The Atswa Initiative 501(c)(3) public charity was founded in 2023 to address issues in the accessibility of timely healthcare services for underserved communities in Ghana, West Africa. Over the years, Ghana has seen a rise in the prevalence of non-communicable chronic illnesses. This creates a double burden, as the healthcare system must manage the complexities of allocating limited resources to combat infectious diseases while also addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. It is our mission to break down barriers to healthcare access and equip underserved communities in Ghana with resources to support health, wellness, and improved quality of life, with a focus on prevention.

“Atswa”- Ga Samai

Ga Samai (Ga Symbols) are traditional symbols of the Ga ethnic group of Ghana. These symbols carry proverbial meaning, and serve as core philosophies for the Ga people. The Atswa symbol, which means prevention is better than cure, serves as the premise and core philosophy of our organization.

“Prevention is better than cure”

This adage is a fundamental part of modern healthcare delivery. It suggests that it is better to stop a problem or illness from happening, than it is to correct or cure it afterwards. We believe that prevention and tackling upstream causes of poor health are paramount to improving public health.
