Rising HIV Cases, and the NACP’s Goal to Meet UNAIDS 95-95-95 Target
In a bold effort to combat HIV/AIDS, Ghana is working diligently toward achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 target by the end of 2025. This ambitious global goal aims to ensure that 95% of people living with HIV know their status, 95% of those diagnosed receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 95% of individuals on treatment achieve viral suppression. The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) remains optimistic about Ghana’s progress, citing ongoing interventions such as community-based testing, public awareness campaigns, and enhanced access to antiretroviral medications. These initiatives have been critical in addressing the challenges faced by the over 350,000 Ghanaians living with HIV.
However, the path to success is not without obstacles. In 2024 alone, over 3,500 HIV-related deaths were recorded, underscoring the urgent need to scale up prevention and treatment efforts. The Ghana AIDS Commission has also raised concerns about a surge in new HIV cases in the Ashanti Region, which now has the second-highest prevalence rate in the country.
The alarming rise in cases highlights gaps in prevention, education, and early detection. Stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS continues to hinder efforts to encourage testing and treatment. To combat this, the Ghana AIDS Commission is intensifying its outreach programs, advocating for policy changes, and calling for increased funding to sustain these efforts. With efforts from government agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations, the country remains steadfast in achieving the 95-95-95 target, and improving the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS.
